The intake process of the Dallas hospital currently in the news shows they directly violated care standards. The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act and related principles should be upheld and honored for all women, including Black birthing mothers, at all times.
Historically, based on research, the pain of Black women in the healthcare setting has been mocked and minimalized.
The level of negligence displayed, perpetuating and supporting maternal health disparities is inexcusable. Upon entry, the mother in labor should have immediately been sent for an exam and to Labor & Delivery.
Examination of federal, and secondarily, state-level MOMNIBUS provisions is no longer an option. Contact your state legislators to advocate for culturally responsive, safe care.
Immediate investigation by the Joint Commission and Texas Health and Human Services Commission, considering consequences, revoked license for the provider on duty, and training need to be prioritized right now, with additional appropriate care and compensation to the mother involved for her pain and suffering.
Your VOICE is needed at the table to address these atrocities, join us.
