Doctor Jennifer Edwards, Program Officer at Renewell, and representing both Trailhead Institute, recently took the stage at the National Academy for State Health Policy Annual Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. She participated in a vital panel discussion on the future of the public health workforce. As part of a national conversation alongside local and national leaders, Jennifer highlighted the importance of community health workers (CHWs) as a growing, viable career pathway in public health.

Her insights touched on the need for investment in CHWs, who serve as essential connectors between communities and healthcare systems, particularly in underserved areas. With the public health workforce facing significant shortages, Jennifer emphasized how community health workers can bridge gaps in care and address health disparities in a culturally competent way.
Jennifer brings a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities for strengthening public health infrastructure from a lens of equity, access, and collaboration. She discussed the critical need for restoring and expanding the workforce, including through accessible training programs and resources that empower CHWs to thrive in their roles.
Her presentation underscored the growing recognition of CHWs as an integral part of achieving health equity, and she is passional about this particularly in maternal health and mental health services. This panel spotlighted the importance of investing in the next generation of public health leaders and reinforcing the capacity of community-based health efforts to create lasting change through state policy.
